Z/V mount for low angle & astro, designed with Alyn Wallace, UK
Well manufactured and engineered. One improvement suggestion is to make it Acra Swiss mountable in stead of a screw.
All remarks from ambassadors and other users in my opinion are true.
1. Easy installation and polar alignment.
2. Easy to use.
2. Compact and light for transportation.
3. After 3 months use seems good and quality construction.
Also the Z/V plate is very useful even if you have a second ball head. It helps change the center of gravity and keeps more stable your gear on the field .
Very happy for my purchase for light landscape astrophotography. For my needs is what I want.
I recently have started shooting astro and after Alyn Wallace suggestion, i purchased and tried MSM star tracker. And it gives so much clarity without needing to stack multiple shots for noise reduction. But even better if you stack photos taken from MSM star tracker and you are on another level!
The lever that allows the V/Z to rotate is difficult to use in certain configurations. The levers are too small to be manipulated with gloves or/and larger fingures
I ordered 2 of these for use with the MSM and they are designed and constructed very well. Solid built and easy to use for adjusting your setup and having the ability to lock them in the position that you want. Very happy with the purchase and considering buying a V mount for the versatility.
Not as simple to setup as I thought. From the tripod, I chose to use the MSM screw-coupled adjustable wedge instead of the Z-bracket, this to make a finer adjustment on the laser polar alignment of the MSM tracker. I felt the Z or V bracket would be harder to adjust finely. On top of the tracker, the Z or V bracket is used to support the ball head and camera.
The Z Bracket works great in combination with my Star Adventurer. The only minor critique from my side: the rotation scale isn´t printed/engraved correctly - 0 and 180 degrees are not perfectly opposite of each other plus I was a little disappointed that only two weeks after the purchase Allyn Wallace talked about the new V2 version which is coming but maybe I´ll need a second one anyway :)
Such a great little Star tracker for when traveling It is very lightweight and portable. The tracking on this thing is very good for Timelapses and especially shooting the Milky Way
I love it. Not only on my tracker but I use it for my audio recorder too !!!
To be honest, besides the Astro usage, we've never thought it could benefit the slider users those much until we received the below reviews!
For low angle and macro usage, we've never thought it too.
Thank you for all your brilliant find out. It encourages us a lot.
Max load: 4kg
Z Platform, 220 gram
V Platform, 175 gram
Material: Aluminum Alloy
Below is a quick review of the journey, we hope you enjoy:
On the 14th June 2020, MSM ambassador Alyn Wallace told us that he has an idea for a new star tracker platform to solve the following problems:
- When at latitudes close to the equator it becomes very difficult to use the ball head on top of a star tracker.
-It’s also difficult to do panoramas, regardless of latitude.
Adding a “Star Tracker Platform” so that the ball head becomes level. The angle can be adjusted and locked into place and the platform can also be rotated. The platform is a perfect match for the Move Shoot Move rotator but also works with any star tracker..
Later, we researched all the possible alternative solutions, practicing and using, finally came to the first version as below:
1st Version, mainly verifying the mechanism to lock the angled platform and also the rotating base.
2nd Version, Enlarged the center rotation section.
- Wrapped the rotating disc to prevent dust entering.
- Changed screw to handle.
Added more space for the bottom handle, so we can operate with gloves.
And Finally, the final 5th Version, with some minor improvements to launch the production.
Below is the performance of the MSM Platform

Work as a tripod head
The V platform is for those who want to save weight. If you're already using a heavy setup you may not have much room to add weight on top of the MSM which has a payload of 3kg.
The Z platform has the added benefit of being able to be used to replace the ball head on a tripod when not using a star tracker at all. You can also use the Z platform as a table-top tripod. So it's an exchange of versatility for a little added weight.
