The origin of the NOMAD Tracker is based on user feedback and our desire to provide the easiest-to-use, most portable, inexpensive star tracker.

What Alan Dyer Say about NOMAD?

Alan Dyer

For Solar Eclipse shooting, don't forget to include the phone bracket in your order, or you can go with the phone kit. So you can do daytime polar alignment with the phone bracket.

Difference between NOMAD and MSM Rotator:

  1. Improved attachment points. The previous manufacturing tolerances were fine for Astro-landscape but deep-sky needs a firmer foundation.

    1. The MSM Rotator, due to its design, required specific weight positioning to keep the ball head secure; this has been completely eliminated.

    2. The laser now screws into the tracker eliminating any chance of wobble.

    3. The industry standard quick-release plate on the bottom is secured in 2 places preventing any twisting of the tracker on its mount.

  2. Improved load capacity.

    1. The hardware has been built to withstand twice the amount of torque as the MSM Rotator.

    2. Where the MSM Rotator was only designed for wide-angle Astro-landscape, the NOMAD has been designed with wide-field deep-sky use in mind.

    3. Availability of an optional counterweight system for more experienced users to go even deeper.

  3. Simplified operation.  By designing and building a device with a narrower focus we were able to make it better while keeping the size down.

    1. One 3-position switch; Northern hemisphere, Southern, or Off.

    2. In order to improve on our goals of ease of use and portability, the non-tracker function of the MSM Rotator has been left off, greatly simplifying the operation of the new tracker.

    3. The NOMAD is focused on one function, star tracking.   (NOMAD does not have timelapse mode)

  4. Reduced size and weight.  A foremost feature of our trackers is portability.

    1. Our users take our trackers with them even when backpacking to some of the most remote areas of the world.

    2. We worked to make storing and transporting the tracker even easier so you'll always want to have it with you when traveling.

    3. The tracker is called NOMAD for a reason; it is designed to travel with you wherever you go.

The Best Portable Star Tracking Solution for Everyone

For novices, we want it to be the best easy-to-use star tracker;

For experienced astrophotographers, we want it to be the most travel-friendly tracker.

But, if users want the old Timelapse functionality, then we may be able to provide pre-orders of the MSM rotator. We’re sorry, but we can not strengthen the star tracker ability and time-lapse ability at the same time. The hardware requirements for improving both of these functions are contradictory.

NOMAD star tracker for Novice and Experienced Astrophotographers- The best gift for you and your loved ones 🎁

So much less intimidating than I feared

I put off getting a star tracker for years because it all seemed so intimidating, but I finally gave in. I took my new Nomad to Joshua Tree, watched a video tutorial on YouTube just after sunset, and was excited to be getting great shots by nightfall. Far easier and more intuitive to use than I had imagined. Now if only I could find a spot with fewer planes going through my long exposure ...

Nomad Tracker & Accessories ... great products!

This Nomad Star Tracker with all its accessories is a really fantastic product, very lightweight and portable, easy to use and works very reliable. Great flexibility in use by all the nice accessories and excellent support from MSM.

Works great

I ordered it for the upcoming eclipse. I haven't had a chance to use it for the sky yet, but I have used it to make some time-lapse videos of the city by turning if flat and letting it rotate horizontally. It took a couple of weeks to arrive, but it works great and is really compact. You kinda need 2 ball-heads to get your camera pointed where you want, so be sure to order their ball head if you don't already have an extra one besides the one that is already on your tripod. You can see the time-lapse videos that I made with it on my Instagrams, CareysPhotoShack and Custom_Island_Tours.

MSM Nomad for upcoming eclipse tracking

Pretty easy to set up. Easy to follow instruction. I owned the original MSM tracker. I like that the arca plate is built directly into the tracker. I got the kit but really unnecessary to include a head lamp. I've got so many but not a deal breaker. I plan on using mine for the upcoming solar eclipse and I have been practicing daytime alignment.

Small, Compact, Easy to use

Good morning !

I have only been able to do a few tests since the arrival of the equipment, but I was immediately pleasantly surprised by the simplicity of setting up and using the NOMAD. Setting up with the phone holder was done in no time and the results were immediate in the photos.
Two small remarks however:
- the screw on the back of the nomad, used to screw in the accessories, seems fragile in aluminum, it is already deformed after a few tightenings, perhaps the choice of a more solid metal should be considered.
- The direction of the rails for sliding the smartphone holder in the adapter would be easier horizontally, to remove it after calibration, because otherwise the polarscope is not accessible.

Well done in any case !

Excellent star tracker!

I’ve been considering buying a tracker for years but delayed the purchase because of cost. When I’ve discovered the Nomad I was excited. A relative cheap tracker that’s sufficient for the biggest part of my photography purposes; shooting the Milky Way and using lenses up to 100mm!

Move Shoot Move star tracker is really good and affordable.

I’ve only had the opportunity to use the Move Shoot Move rotator a few times due to weeks of cloudy skies where I live however, the few times the skies cleared I was able to put this tracker through its paces.
First of all, it is an affordable quality product that is well engineered and simple to use. It is perfect for throwing it in my backpack and hiking due to its light weight, small profile and portability. Having the option of using the polar scope or laser pointer makes it much easier and quicker to polar align.
The tracker worked perfectly for both wide field Astro and deep sky objects however, using long and heavy telephoto lenses will be problematic due to weight limitations.
This tracker can be used in your backyard but it really shines if you’re going to take it hiking with you.
Looking forward to many years of shooting Astro with this tracker.
I also purchased the ingenious “V” and “Z” leveling brackets from Alyn Wallace for mounting my camera gear to be able to keep my camera level. These brackets are very well made and designed. It will make your life much easier and will ensure that your equipment remains level and allow you to quickly and safely swivel your camera in order to polar align.
