The origin of the NOMAD Tracker is based on user feedback and our desire to provide the easiest-to-use, most portable, inexpensive star tracker.

Difference between NOMAD and MSM Rotator:

  1. Improved attachment points. The previous manufacturing tolerances were fine for Astro-landscape but deep-sky needs a firmer foundation.

    1. The MSM Rotator, due to its design, required specific weight positioning to keep the ball head secure; this has been completely eliminated.

    2. The laser now screws into the tracker eliminating any chance of wobble.

    3. The industry standard quick-release plate on the bottom is secured in 2 places preventing any twisting of the tracker on its mount.

  2. Improved load capacity.

    1. The hardware has been built to withstand twice the amount of torque as the MSM Rotator.

    2. Where the MSM Rotator was only designed for wide-angle Astro-landscape, the NOMAD has been designed with wide-field deep-sky use in mind.

    3. Availability of an optional counterweight system for more experienced users to go even deeper.

  3. Simplified operation.  By designing and building a device with a narrower focus we were able to make it better while keeping the size down.

    1. One 3-position switch; Northern hemisphere, Southern, or Off.

    2. In order to improve on our goals of ease of use and portability, the non-tracker function of the MSM Rotator has been left off, greatly simplifying the operation of the new tracker.

    3. The NOMAD is focused on one function, star tracking.   (NOMAD does not have timelapse mode)

  4. Reduced size and weight.  A foremost feature of our trackers is portability.

    1. Our users take our trackers with them even when backpacking to some of the most remote areas of the world.

    2. We worked to make storing and transporting the tracker even easier so you'll always want to have it with you when traveling.

    3. The tracker is called NOMAD for a reason; it is designed to travel with you wherever you go.

The Best Portable Star Tracking Solution for Everyone

For novices, we want it to be the best easy-to-use star tracker;

For experienced astrophotographers, we want it to be the most travel-friendly tracker.

But, if users want the old Timelapse functionality, then we may be able to provide pre-orders of the MSM rotator. We’re sorry, but we can not strengthen the star tracker ability and time-lapse ability at the same time. The hardware requirements for improving both of these functions are contradictory.

Significant improvement over MSM, but some issues still

I love the new interface with the screw on ring, but I have found that the Z plate loosens when I use it, making me have to take the whole assembly apart to tighten it, which is a giant pain when I am out in the field. I finally got to the point of gluing it on.
The other issue I have is when I mount it to the Benro geared head, I did have to mount it sideways so the knobs are not in the way. I would love to see an adaptor to make it a bit taller so I can mount it the normal way on my tripod. I am still trying to get used to using the right knobs for adjusting and have used the wrong one ending up with a tilt I didn’t want. I am happy that I can use a higher payload allowing me to use the heavier 200mm lens I have, but would love to see some tweaks to make it perfect.

Great initial impressions!

I've had my Nomade tracker for about a month now. Preliminary data on a few clear nights are looking awesome. I love the portability, ease of use and the rock solid tracking even with a big 200mm lens. Thanks MSM!

Una gran mejora respecto a la Rotator y una portabilidad excelente.

La MSM Nomade soluciona algunos de los problemas que tenía la Rotator. Sin duda una gran opción para tracker de viaje, gran portabilidad y peso reducido.

Loving the NOMADe

I have been shooting with the MoveShootMove for a few years and recommend it to my students. I received the NEW NOMADe about three weeks ago and I went out last weekend and I'm very impressed. With the extra torque I had no problem with star trailing. Nice round circles stars even with a 50mm at 2 minutes!!!

NOMADe is great, the Phone kit not so

The NOMADe is my first star tracker, and I chose it because of its lightweight portability and ease of use. As someone new to star tracking it definitely ticks the boxes for these, its really simple to use.

I went for the phone kit and I have found this is too fiddly as there is no adapter to add the phone mount to the NOMADe and align to Polaris. Instead you have to screw the Phone Mount onto the plate and align to the southern star using an app like Photopills, irrespective of which hemisphere you are in. Once you have aligned you have to take the phone mount off and then mount your ball head and camera onto the plate. If you want to re-align you have to take the camera off remove it from the plate and add the phone mount back on. At the moment I am just holding the phone mount to the back of the NOMADe and aligning to Polaris, which is not ideal. Hopefully an adapter will be made available to resolve this.

In terms of the NOMADe's tracking I've managed to do a couple of successful tests and have got 2 min exposure with a 20mm lens (FF equivalent) and also 8 out of 18 20 second exposures with a 100-400mm zoom lens at 380mm, and given I am using a phone mount to align I think this is good (a polar scope is really required for better accuracy with such long focal lengths).

Overall I am very happy with the NOMADe itself as it does the job it set out to do, and for the unit alone I would give it 5 stars. However the phone kit without an adapter to align to Polaris makes aligning fiddly and overcomplicated. My rating reflects using the NOMADe with the phone kit.

NOMADe a nice improvement over the original MSM

As a small star tracker, the NOMADe is a big improvement over the original MSM. The two biggest issues I had with the MSM were the sloppy connections for the laser/scope to the MSM body which resulted in less accurate alignments and the screw mount to the ballhead loosening up in the middle of shooting. The first issue was the key reason I preordered the NOMADe. Withe the new design the laser and scope mount screw directly to the NOMADe without any slop in the connection. For the second issue I eventually picked up a Leofoto QS-60 to solve the issue with the MSM but the NOMADe doesn't require that workaround as a very solid mounting system is now built in. As to the other changes, I never used the MSM as a "rotator" as I have better options so losing that functionality was not missed. The switches are now further simplified, and the overall construction seems smaller but more solidly built.

Fantastic piece of kit!

Its small enough to leave in your camera bag and forget its there so you will never be without it when you need it. It really is tiny!
At first I wasn't sure about the gear mounting for the camera side ball head but now I've used it a couple of times its fantastic.
I mainly use it for wide field milky way astrophotography and so far 3 minuet exposures have been a breeze at 20mm.
I've just got in from shooting Andromeda for the first time and I have 10 out of 10 sharp 2 minuet exposures @50mm so I'm very pleased with it!
Now for the down sides.
The Laser is still useless in the cold. you really need to keep it in your pocket if the temperature is below 10 degrees.
the laser is blocked by either the camera or the lens if you try and set up polar alignment with the camera attached. you really need a lot of faith in your tripod
I have the laser alignment only but it came with the bracket for the polar scope which is great! but I cant see how I would mount it??
