The origin of the NOMAD Tracker is based on user feedback and our desire to provide the easiest-to-use, most portable, inexpensive star tracker.

Difference between NOMAD and MSM Rotator:

  1. Improved attachment points. The previous manufacturing tolerances were fine for Astro-landscape but deep-sky needs a firmer foundation.

    1. The MSM Rotator, due to its design, required specific weight positioning to keep the ball head secure; this has been completely eliminated.

    2. The laser now screws into the tracker eliminating any chance of wobble.

    3. The industry standard quick-release plate on the bottom is secured in 2 places preventing any twisting of the tracker on its mount.

  2. Improved load capacity.

    1. The hardware has been built to withstand twice the amount of torque as the MSM Rotator.

    2. Where the MSM Rotator was only designed for wide-angle Astro-landscape, the NOMAD has been designed with wide-field deep-sky use in mind.

    3. Availability of an optional counterweight system for more experienced users to go even deeper.

  3. Simplified operation.  By designing and building a device with a narrower focus we were able to make it better while keeping the size down.

    1. One 3-position switch; Northern hemisphere, Southern, or Off.

    2. In order to improve on our goals of ease of use and portability, the non-tracker function of the MSM Rotator has been left off, greatly simplifying the operation of the new tracker.

    3. The NOMAD is focused on one function, star tracking.   (NOMAD does not have timelapse mode)

  4. Reduced size and weight.  A foremost feature of our trackers is portability.

    1. Our users take our trackers with them even when backpacking to some of the most remote areas of the world.

    2. We worked to make storing and transporting the tracker even easier so you'll always want to have it with you when traveling.

    3. The tracker is called NOMAD for a reason; it is designed to travel with you wherever you go.

The Best Portable Star Tracking Solution for Everyone

For novices, we want it to be the best easy-to-use star tracker;

For experienced astrophotographers, we want it to be the most travel-friendly tracker.

But, if users want the old Timelapse functionality, then we may be able to provide pre-orders of the MSM rotator. We’re sorry, but we can not strengthen the star tracker ability and time-lapse ability at the same time. The hardware requirements for improving both of these functions are contradictory.

Move Shoot Move Nomad

This is a great little Star tracker, accurate and easy to use as well as being light and portable, I would recommend this to anyone interested in Astro photography.

Nomad and phone attachment

Really pleased with the performance of the rotator, operates perfectly
The only issue is that in the dark I managed to loose on of the tiny white screws that hole phone and polariscope holder Suggest you supply spares in future

A Worthy Upgrade

The Nomad fixes all the issues I had with my original MSM star tracker and adds an extra small but beneficial feature. My biggest issue with the original MSM was that the ball head attachment always came loose. This has now been corrected with the new geared attachment base. Second, the laser now attaching directly to the Nomad without the need to carry an extra bracket is great. The added benefit of the Nomad being smaller is also huge, as I routinely hike and camp out in remote locations. This makes it easier to pack and carry when weight and space are a premium. Keep in mind that Nomad does not have all of the other functions of the original MSM tracker. However, this doesn't bother me, as I have only ever used it as a star tracker.

Nomad is an excellent low weight tracker

During a few years I have used the MSM rotator. For landscapes it is good bit for astronomy it did not operate always perfectly.
The new Nomad is a delight to use. Very easy set up. Just one button and perfect operation. I made quite a number of 30s photos of the Orion nebula and did not notice any trails whatsoever. Ik think that especially for milky way photography the Nomad will be very suited: low weight and easy setup.

Nomad much improved over original rotator

The ball head attachment does not slip al all, I always had trouble with slippage on the original. The screw in laser pointer mount is a great improvement over the previous flimsy attachment bracket. I never used the pano rotator mode so not having it is no loss.

Mejorado el MSM Rotator

El nuevo MSM NOMAD es más compacto y ligero que el Rotator y muy sencillo de usar. Estará siempre en la mochila para las salidas nocturnas.

Orion, Horsehead and Flame nebulas captured with MSM Nomad and 105mm lens

The Nomad tracker and wedge works very well. I managed to image nebulae in Orion with 180x15s subs with a 105mm telphoto on an APS C sensor and with a SV220 dual band filter. The tracker perfomed well with a stable drive, very minor trailing occured on 30s exposures. The attached image has been cropped to the main nebulae, but the original included part of Barnard's loop.

As noted by another reviewer the altitiude/declination pivet bolt on the wedge is fully threaded which introduces backlash and play during adjustment. I replaced mine with a cut dwon M6 bolt which has an unthreaded portion, as illustrated. This is a cap head screw but does not slip when the handle is tightened. This plain shaft gives better worm engagment and cuts down the backlash play considerably. MSM should consider this simple upgrade.
