The origin of the NOMAD Tracker is based on user feedback and our desire to provide the easiest-to-use, most portable, inexpensive star tracker.Ā Ā

Difference between NOMAD and MSM Rotator:

  1. Improved attachment points.Ā The previous manufacturing tolerances were fine for Astro-landscape but deep-sky needs a firmer foundation.

    1. The MSM Rotator, due to its design, required specific weight positioning to keep the ball head secure; this has been completely eliminated.Ā Ā

    2. The laser now screws into the tracker eliminating any chance of wobble.Ā Ā

    3. The industry standard quick-release plate on the bottom is secured in 2 places preventing any twisting of the tracker on its mount.Ā Ā

  2. Improved load capacity.Ā Ā

    1. The hardware has been built to withstand twice the amount of torque as the MSM Rotator.Ā

    2. Where the MSM Rotator was only designed for wide-angle Astro-landscape, the NOMAD has been designed with wide-field deep-sky use in mind.Ā Ā

    3. Availability of an optional counterweight system for more experienced users to go even deeper.

  3. Simplified operation.Ā  By designing and building a device with a narrower focus we were able to make it better while keeping the size down.

    1. One 3-position switch; Northern hemisphere, Southern, or Off.Ā Ā

    2. In order to improve on our goals of ease of use and portability, the non-tracker function of the MSM Rotator has been left off, greatly simplifying the operation of the new tracker.Ā Ā

    3. The NOMAD is focused on one function, star tracking.Ā  Ā (NOMAD does not have timelapse mode)Ā

  4. Reduced size and weight.Ā Ā A foremost feature of our trackers is portability.Ā

    1. Our users take our trackers with them even when backpacking to some of the most remote areas of the world.Ā

    2. We worked to make storing and transporting the tracker even easier so you'll always want to have it with you when traveling.

    3. The tracker is called NOMAD for a reason; it is designed to travel with you wherever you go.Ā Ā

The Best Portable Star Tracking Solution for Everyone

For novices, we want it to be the best easy-to-use star tracker;

For experienced astrophotographers, we want it to be the most travel-friendly tracker.

Ā

But, if users want the old Timelapse functionality, then we may be able to provide pre-orders of the MSM rotator. We’re sorry, but we can not strengthen the star tracker ability and time-lapse ability at the same time. The hardware requirements for improving both of these functions are contradictory.

Great device and outstanding customer service

Bought the MSM rotator for a trip to Utah. Although the device was out of stock, customer service helped me get it delivered before I headed out for vacation. This is my first attempt at using a rotator, although it has a learning curve, the videos are helpful to set it up. Now I only need to find a set up that would help me compose better. Will definitely get the z mounts! Overall, very satisfied with my purchase and the service I received

Inexpensive way to try Astrophotography

Though you still need a couple of ball heads to set up the MSM, and the laser sight set up is not super accurate, it does work well enough to assist a beginner get into shooting the night sky. For someone like me who does not have clear night sky where I live, and only get an opportunity to shoot the night sky when camping, it is a good solution.

A great way to begin photographing the Milky Way.

Relatively easy setup, polar alignment in the southern Hemisphere is challenging but that is the case with every tracker. The phone mount makes it somewhat easier. The ability to charge via USB is a big plus as is its size, great for travel.

Easy to set up, sharp stars with 4 min exposures!

Easy to use

Setup was a super easy. Laser pointer makes polar alignment a snap! High humidity, rain and clouds are making picture taking difficult, but the tracker seems to be functioning great.

Not used it yet

I have not used my MSM yet due to bad weather. But so far I can say it is light weight, easy to use (tested indoors only) and seems to be well made. As soon as I have tried it out correctly I will edit/write a full review.

View from a novice

All of my time has been spent watching the various tutorials, a necessary process as the instruction booklet is a waste of paper.. The biggest issue I've had so far is finding a clear sky at the right time. English weather and city light pollution has been my bugbear. However locating the north star and lining up the laser pointer was very easy and my stars have been pinpoints.. The one remaining issue I have now is what the other buttons do ? when do you use them , why do you use them, why would you 1/2 star track? or even slower, you provide these but give no reason for such a facility. Overall for a beginner with a cheap 20mm lens mounted on a Sony A92 I'm enjoying the process and very pleased with my purchase.
