Hi Friends,

For months we have been refining a new product designed together with professional landscape astrophotographer, Alyn Wallace (website). Now, we're ready for pre-order.

Below is a quick review of the journey, we hope you enjoy:

On the 14th June 2020, MSM ambassador Alyn Wallace told us that he has an idea for a new star tracker platform to solve the following problems:

Check what our users say:

The Problem:

- When at latitudes close to the equator it becomes very difficult to use the ball head on top of a star tracker.

-It’s also difficult to do panoramas, regardless of latitude.

The Solution

Adding a “Star Tracker Platform” so that the ball head becomes level. The angle can be adjusted and locked into place and the platform can also be rotated. The platform is a perfect match for the Move Shoot Move rotator but also works with any star tracker..

Later, we researched all the possible alternative solutions, practicing and using, finally came to the first version as below:

1st Version, mainly verifying the mechanism to lock the angled platform and also the rotating base.

2nd Version, Enlarged the center rotation section.

3rd version,

- Wrapped the rotating disc to prevent dust entering.

- Changed screw to handle.

4th Version,

Added more space for the bottom handle, so we can operate with gloves.

And Finally, the final 5th Version, with some minor improvements to launch the production.

Work as a tripod head

V or Z? Which Should You Buy?
The V and Z platforms both solve the problem of having your ballhead at an awkward angle when on a star tracker. So what's the difference?

The V platform is for those who want to save weight. If you're already using a heavy setup you may not have much room to add weight on top of the MSM which has a payload of 3kg.

The Z platform has the added benefit of being able to be used to replace the ball head on a tripod when not using a star tracker at all. You can also use the Z platform as a table-top tripod. So it's an exchange of versatility for a little added weight.

Love the idea but accuracy is well off

Loved the idea and it’s applications. But the markings are way off on both the Z & V platforms and when I reached out to customer service not only did the lady know that the markings were inaccurate but I was also told - and not very politely - to live with it. When one is shooting at night one depends on the accuracy of the individual components to get the best photos unfortunately this isn’t the case here. Wonder if Alyn is aware or if he got samples which were accurate.

Z/V Platform

The Z/V platform designed by Alan Wallace is a game changer if you love to shoot milky way panoramas using a star guider. The wedge is also great to help condense space in your gear bag and not have to pack around a traditional bulky wedge to align your star tracker. Craftsmanship of the wedge is top notch and you can tell it has been very thought out in its design.

Very Well Made

I have the V Platform and it performs very well. Locks down solid and hold the camera and ball head very secure.

Makes Camera Setup straight forward (and reliable).

I have bought a few cheaper Z plates in the past - the first one fell apart before I used it and the others could not take any weight. I have replaced them all with two MSM Z plates and a V plate - very happy.

They work perfectly

I have already used them several times and the truth is that they are a pretty good invention and work well and without problems, I recommend them 100%.

Z and V: unexpectedly solid

When I first saw Alyn’s youtube video on the V and Z platforms, I recognised his engineering expertise in their design (the locking angles are great, and rotateability is particularly useful, and unique), but I didn’t expect them to be so _solid_. I can use them in place of a ballhead, in many circumstances, and there is no flex at all. And they pack down so small! I’m really glad I bought them :-)

Simple, but absolutely amazing!

I took the advice of several YouTubers, ordered the Move Shoot Move, and just spent the weekend taking some amazing night sky photos. This thing went with me on my Adventure Motorcycle trip, withstood 200 miles of trails before getting to a very dark location up on a ridge to take my photos. It worked flawlessly.

Z/V Tripod & Star Tracker Mount

Love the Z mount , well designed and easy to use. It gives you added versatility and a lower profile than 2 ball mounts. I would recommend this to anyone uses the MSM tracker.
