The origin of the NOMAD Tracker is based on user feedback and our desire to provide the easiest-to-use, most portable, inexpensive star tracker.

What Alan Dyer Say about NOMAD?

For Solar Eclipse shooting, don't forget to include the phone bracket in your order, or you can go with the phone kit. So you can do daytime polar alignment with the phone bracket.

Difference between NOMAD and MSM Rotator:

  1. Improved attachment points. The previous manufacturing tolerances were fine for Astro-landscape but deep-sky needs a firmer foundation.

    1. The MSM Rotator, due to its design, required specific weight positioning to keep the ball head secure; this has been completely eliminated.

    2. The laser now screws into the tracker eliminating any chance of wobble.

    3. The industry standard quick-release plate on the bottom is secured in 2 places preventing any twisting of the tracker on its mount.

  2. Improved load capacity.

    1. The hardware has been built to withstand twice the amount of torque as the MSM Rotator.

    2. Where the MSM Rotator was only designed for wide-angle Astro-landscape, the NOMAD has been designed with wide-field deep-sky use in mind.

    3. Availability of an optional counterweight system for more experienced users to go even deeper.

  3. Simplified operation.  By designing and building a device with a narrower focus we were able to make it better while keeping the size down.

    1. One 3-position switch; Northern hemisphere, Southern, or Off.

    2. In order to improve on our goals of ease of use and portability, the non-tracker function of the MSM Rotator has been left off, greatly simplifying the operation of the new tracker.

    3. The NOMAD is focused on one function, star tracking.   (NOMAD does not have timelapse mode)

  4. Reduced size and weight.  A foremost feature of our trackers is portability.

    1. Our users take our trackers with them even when backpacking to some of the most remote areas of the world.

    2. We worked to make storing and transporting the tracker even easier so you'll always want to have it with you when traveling.

    3. The tracker is called NOMAD for a reason; it is designed to travel with you wherever you go.

The Best Portable Star Tracking Solution for Everyone

For novices, we want it to be the best easy-to-use star tracker;

For experienced astrophotographers, we want it to be the most travel-friendly tracker.

But, if users want the old Timelapse functionality, then we may be able to provide pre-orders of the MSM rotator. We’re sorry, but we can not strengthen the star tracker ability and time-lapse ability at the same time. The hardware requirements for improving both of these functions are contradictory.

Absolutely amazing tracker

I am extremely impressed with the qualities of the NOMAD star tracer. Very light and portable, with it you can easily shoot single shots and panoramas with precise tracking up to 4 minutes or more. Highly recommend!

Solid

Converting from the 1st gen tracker to the Nomad has been a welcomed upgrade.

Eclipse and night landscapes

I’m impressed with how well the Nomad works when polar aligned with the laser and the scope. Polar align takes less than 5 minutes and the results are consistent. Polar alignment at night keeps the sun in frame for 3+ hours during the day, and stars at night are pinpoint with 15-400 mm lenses at 4 minutes. The negatives are that the daytime polar align set up is not accurate enough to keep the sun in frame with a 600 mm lens for more than 20-30 minutes. There are a number of parts that are needed to use the Nomad (motor unit, polar scope, laser, scope/laser adapter. charging unit with USB cord, and wedge). The complete kit comes with a small pouch for the motor unit. I would be ideal if the kit include a carry case for all the parts.
If anyone wants to buy my daytime polar align kit, let me know.

Solid piece of equipment.

I haven’t done any night time astrophotography yet. I have put it on my tripod and mounted my camera and tested the drive. Appears to be working great. Now all I need is some clear nights here on Lake Ontario, spring is a tough season out eclipse was covered by very thick clouds. When I first received the NOMAD and picked it up I could tell it was well built, it felt solid. The top gear is precision cut . I am ready to go have my first target picked, T Coronae Borealis. I have no regrets purchasing the NOMAD and would recommend that anyone looking for a tracker to give it a try.

Just right!

This was my first experience with a tracker and I was able to get it aligned well on my first outing and in just a few minutes I was capturing images! It is the perfect size and notches into my regular camera bag with ease!

Great tracker with great results

I used this MSM tracker for the first time. My first impression was a well-built tracker. Well finished, with a very well-made fastening system and a very curious and precise polar alignment mechanism.
Accustomed to my venerable Staradventurer, I was very surprised by the ease of use of this NOMAD.
It's as easy as opening a door to fresh air.
I loved how well defined its purpose was and it held up perfectly to positioning with my Sony A7SIII camera and my 70-200 to photograph the Virgo galaxy cluster. with 110 photographs from 30" to 135mm.
To increase the exposure time I think it is very good to purchase the wedge and the polar finder.
Excellent tracker. Very good invention!

MSM Nomad star tracker

Product is well built and performs solidly. Polar alignment is simple with the laser. My laser required a slight adjustment of the alignment screws which was a simple process with the provided allen wrench.

Small and strong

I've seen many reviews before purchesing the unit, and it doesn't come close to what I was expecting. It's a compact unit, heavy and well build. In my case it does the job as expected. Till now I've been tracking up to 30 seconds but with zoom lens up to 210 mm, and I've very impressed with the results. Given the weight, size and application, for me its the best fit.

Simple, lightweight and it just works

I bought the Nomad for travel purposes seeing as it’s so small and portable. Setup was quick and easy, I am in the southern hemisphere and using the phone mount with photopills I was able to accurately align to the southern pole. My only gripe with the Nomad is the on/off switch or rather the North/Southern hemisphere switch. It can be easily turned on when putting it away into your bag so just make sure you’re aware of this and pop the tracker back into its case when you’re done. All in all I’m very happy and will continue to use the Nomad for my astrophotography
