For me the best Star Tracker for Beginners

I used the device for the first time during the solar eclipse. It worked wonderfully—no manual tracking required. The sun was always centered in the frame. I'm already looking forward to my next photos of the Milky Way.

Compact and Capable Star Tracker – Even with 135mm

I tested the MSM Nomad with my Sony a6400 and Samyang 135mm f/1.8 for astrophotography.

The Nomad is very compact and lightweight, which makes it easy to transport and quick to set up. For shorter focal lengths, I think it is a very practical solution.

I also tested it with the 135mm lens. At this focal length, the setup becomes more demanding and requires a very accurate polar alignment as well as a solid tripod. With careful setup, however, I was able to achieve good results.

What I particularly like about the MSM Nomad is its compact design and straightforward handling. For mobile astrophotography and moderate focal lengths, it is a very interesting and capable tracker.

For significantly longer focal lengths or heavier camera and lens combinations, I would personally recommend using a larger mount.

Small and compact star tracker made for the mountains

Move Shoot Move NOMAD — My Field Review 🌌

When you spend as much time as I do photographing the night sky in the mountains of North Wales, you quickly learn that size, weight and simplicity matter.

That’s one of the reasons I’ve been so impressed with the new Move Shoot Move NOMAD Star Tracker.

Having used the previous generation, I was really interested to see how the NOMAD would fit into my astrophotography workflow — and for me, the improvements have made a noticeable difference.

The biggest thing is its compact size.

When I’m heading into Snowdonia with a camera, lenses, tripod, clothing and everything else I need for a night in the mountains, I don’t want to be carrying a large equatorial mount. The NOMAD takes up very little space in my bag, meaning I can have tracking capability with me without compromising the rest of my kit.

And then there’s the setup.

Working in the dark, often on wet, uneven ground and sometimes in rapidly changing weather, I want equipment that gets out of the bag and into operation quickly. The NOMAD has become a really natural part of my workflow.

The improvements over the previous model make that process feel much more refined. I spend less time thinking about the tracker and more time thinking about composition, focus, exposure and the light in front of me.

That’s exactly what I want from astrophotography equipment.

For my style of photography — combining dramatic North Wales landscapes with the Milky Way, zodiacal light and the wider night sky — the NOMAD hits a fantastic balance between portability and performance.

It isn’t a replacement for a large equatorial mount, and it doesn’t need to be.

Its strength is being able to throw it in the camera bag, hike into the mountains and have tracking available when I need it.

For me, that’s the biggest compliment I can give it:

It makes astrophotography easier without getting in the way of the photography.

Small. Portable. Fast to deploy. And a significant step forward from the previous generation.

🌌 The NOMAD has earned its place in my bag

NOMAD Kit

Ordered on a recommendation from someone. Not sure what I was ordering but the tracker arrived with the laser pointer, along with the instructions and a little help from YT videos we were up and running. A great addition to my kit, I’d highly recommend it to other budding astrophotographers

perfect to get started

I have a reasonable amount of experience with photography but I only started this year to look up at the darkness. The NOMAD with the wedge provided a super easy and very affordable way to get into combining these two passions - capturing what the eye could not or only barely see.
My setup is modest: A Canon 700D with a Samyang 135mm lens, tethering right at the edge of what the NOMAD is supposed to be able to do if Youtube is to be believed.
Polar alignment with the (illuminated) polar scope and the wedge was simple enough, so I set out to do some testing: how long an exposure could I get away with at what is essentially 200mm focal length: If I pixel-peep then at 120s I can see the starts to start trailing but honestly at 100% zoom I cannot. But my eyes are old and the polar alignment on every night might not be as good. So I'm making 60s my default for now.
I since took absolutely stunning pictures of various nebulas if Cygnus, the Andromeda Galaxy and a beautiful composition of the Heart & Soul nebulae with the χ & h Persei star clusters in the other corner of the picture. Bortle 3 and around 3 hours of exposure: crisp stars, good detail on the nebulae.... I am in love.

Very nice tracker

Just tried in the field and as a newbie with a star tracker it worked perfectly. Very nice results and sharp stars with eyposures up to 3 minutes.

The Right Size!

I had an older tracker, one with a 5lb counterweight and a clunky polar alignment process. Have you ever put that in your pack and climbed a mountain? I knew it was time for a change, and I bought the Move-Shoot-Move tracker. So far, I'm very happy with the size and the ease of polar alignment. It fits in my hiking pack easily and I'm not hesitant to take it on an outing. I get great results and have done 2 minute exposures with no star trailing, I intend to get much more use out of this in the near future!

Even an old lady can use it

I am so impressed with this device. I am an accomplished old school photographer and have been reluctant to try a star tracker. I have used the one image and the blending method of Milky Way photography, but this device is a game changer. It sets up with ease and alignment is a breeze. Thank you this old lady loves the product.

Easy Alignment

I received the Beginner starter kit and have used it twice now. Very impressed with build quality and how fast and easy it is to align. Second time was in pitch black skies in Grand Teton National Park, and I literally aligned it in 10 seconds. Will enjoy using it more this summer during Milky Way Season

The most little powerful tool to capture stars

The most significant upgrade from rotator is its pure power. Despite being incredibly compact (easily sliding into a jacket pocket), it boasts a payload capacity of up to 3.5 kg. This means it can confidently handle not just a mirrorless camera with a wide-angle lens, but also heavier setups like a Sony A7 V paired with a 70-200mm lens or a small dedicated refractor.
True to the MSM philosophy, the Nomad is built for speed. If you are a tracker who values getting your shot before the clouds roll in, the Nomad is a joy. The interface is dead simple, and the polar alignment process—especially if you use the laser pointer or the upgraded polar scope—is fast and straightforward.

Thanks to improved internal gearing and a higher-torque motor, the Nomad offers significantly better tracking stability than its predecessor. Periodic error is minimized, allowing for longer exposures (often 2–3 minutes depending on focal length) without trailing, making minor moon or focal-heavy tracking much more reliable.

It remains an exceptional tool for both astrophotography tracking and panoramic/time-lapse photography. The ability to switch modes easily makes it a permanent resident in a gear bag, even for daytime landscape shooters.

While the Nomad itself is a powerhouse, its performance is heavily dependent on the quality of your equatorial wedge. If you try to use it with a standard ball head for polar alignment, it can be a frustrating experience. To truly unlock the 3.5 kg payload capacity without flexure, investing in a high-quality, rigid wedge is mandatory, adding to the overall cost and bulk.

When pointing at high celestial latitudes, checking alignment through the optical scope can require some serious gymnastics. While the laser gets you close instantly, a right-angle finder or a more ergonomic scope mounting solution would be a massive quality-of-life upgrade for precise deep-sky work.

The Move Shoot Move Nomad is arguably the best **ultra-portable** star tracker on the market. It successfully bridges the gap between the ultra-light wide-field rotators and the heavy, cumbersome equatorial mounts. If you want to shoot the Milky Way, track the moon, or dabble in tracking longer focal lengths without breaking your back on a hike, the Nomad is an absolute triumph—just ensure you pair it with a solid wedge to get the best results.

Amazing little thing

Went to La Palma / Canaries last month. Amazing milky way and amazing shots with MSM Nomad. Canon R7 (APS-C sensor) with 85mm mounted on MSM, polar alignment simply done with iPhone App and easily targeted on Antares/Rho Ophiuchi wirh ball head. Flawless sharp stars @60 sec, on each and every frame!
