Below is a quick review of the journey, we hope you enjoy:
On the 14th June 2020, MSM ambassador Alyn Wallace told us that he has an idea for a new star tracker platform to solve the following problems:
Check what our users say:
- When at latitudes close to the equator it becomes very difficult to use the ball head on top of a star tracker.
-It’s also difficult to do panoramas, regardless of latitude.
Adding a “Star Tracker Platform” so that the ball head becomes level. The angle can be adjusted and locked into place and the platform can also be rotated. The platform is a perfect match for the Move Shoot Move rotator but also works with any star tracker..
Later, we researched all the possible alternative solutions, practicing and using, finally came to the first version as below:
1st Version, mainly verifying the mechanism to lock the angled platform and also the rotating base.
2nd Version, Enlarged the center rotation section.
- Wrapped the rotating disc to prevent dust entering.
- Changed screw to handle.
Added more space for the bottom handle, so we can operate with gloves.
And Finally, the final 5th Version, with some minor improvements to launch the production.
Below is the performance of the MSM Platform

Work as a tripod head
The V platform is for those who want to save weight. If you're already using a heavy setup you may not have much room to add weight on top of the MSM which has a payload of 3kg.
The Z platform has the added benefit of being able to be used to replace the ball head on a tripod when not using a star tracker at all. You can also use the Z platform as a table-top tripod. So it's an exchange of versatility for a little added weight.
I ordered them because I wanted a setup for milky way mosaic panoramas. Although very strong it's too weak and unstable (and too less precise vertically, specially with 50mm+ focal length) for my nikon d810a with a nikkor 14 24 2.8g. so I went for a benro b1 ball head (levelling) and leofoto vh30r and a nodal ninja rd10 instead. thats much more reliable and convenient.
Having recently purchased a tracking mount for astrophotography I was looking for a mount to help with composition. Enter the Z/V platform that gives me complete flexibility to adjust composition once aligned! It's also very handy for landscapes too!
The built is just as advertised. Strong, robust and light.
I love to have them for an easy installation of my Startracker but also a great addition to my camera bag for versatility when I need to take product pictures or when I want to do multi shots panos. A lot more stable on these plates than solely with my ball head.
I don’t regret the purchase one bit.
I bought both the Z and V platform. They are such high quality light weight compact solutions for a wedge, or platform for the MSM. I like the ease of rotating the V/Z for lining up composition. They also keep their position without drifting with my Canon R + Rf lenses up to 70-200. I’ve used for many functions on and off tripod. I’m a small person who needs compact equipment when traveling or hiking to locations. Thank you MSM and Alyn Wallace!
The product is very well made, quite solid, unfortunately I have not yet had the opportunity to test it well in the field. Hope to find cleaner skies at night
This platform turned out to be an extremely handy tool to position my camera in almost any direction I want. In combination with the MSM rotator this gives me full felxibility because the MSM should always be aligned with Polaris, but that is usually not the direction I want to point my camera.
A simple but effective device. The Z plate is lightweight, compact and very versatile. It's also capable holding my Fuji X-T2 plus a Zeiss 12mm lens+warmer without any creep. I've been impressed by it's performance. Oh, and did I mention it's inexpensive!
I use the V platform for milky way panoramas together with a star tracker. Solid and well designed...great product.
I’m finding no end of uses for my Z/V platforms, they are versatile, great to use, provide stability and lock tightly, perfect for my heavy camera equipment.
These are a “must have” in my camera bag as they provide many universal solutions to holding my camera.
This platform is great for aiming a camera anywhere from a star tracker; much lighter than a ballhead.
