A great way to begin photographing the Milky Way.

Relatively easy setup, polar alignment in the southern Hemisphere is challenging but that is the case with every tracker. The phone mount makes it somewhat easier. The ability to charge via USB is a big plus as is its size, great for travel.

Great compact tracker!

Easy to set up, sharp stars with 4 min exposures!

Easy to use

Setup was a super easy. Laser pointer makes polar alignment a snap! High humidity, rain and clouds are making picture taking difficult, but the tracker seems to be functioning great.

Not used it yet

I have not used my MSM yet due to bad weather. But so far I can say it is light weight, easy to use (tested indoors only) and seems to be well made. As soon as I have tried it out correctly I will edit/write a full review.

View from a novice

All of my time has been spent watching the various tutorials, a necessary process as the instruction booklet is a waste of paper.. The biggest issue I've had so far is finding a clear sky at the right time. English weather and city light pollution has been my bugbear. However locating the north star and lining up the laser pointer was very easy and my stars have been pinpoints.. The one remaining issue I have now is what the other buttons do ? when do you use them , why do you use them, why would you 1/2 star track? or even slower, you provide these but give no reason for such a facility. Overall for a beginner with a cheap 20mm lens mounted on a Sony A92 I'm enjoying the process and very pleased with my purchase.

Great value for the price

So portable and easy to set up. I used it only for a few nights during my travels and it worked like a charm.

First star tracker

Wow...! What an introduction to long exposure astrophotography, Absolutely amazing piece of kit and so small, it fits in my back pack with my Canon R6 16mm 2.8, 24-70 2.8 and my 70-200 f2.8, love it and soo easy to align with the laser pointer. Roll on the long winter dark skies. Highly recommended.

Amazing and Accurate Little Tracker

I'm absolutely in love with the MSM tracker, I'm using it only with 20mm and 14mm lenses, however, had a go with a 50mm lens, using the laser only and got super sharp images with 4min exposure! Incredible what the little and light rotator can do!

MSM works great!

I used it for the Milky Way August 11 and it did a great job.

Excellent Rotator

Never having used anything like this, I was dubious about purchasing a Star Tracker as they seem so expensive and Astro isn't something that I do a lot of.

I bit the bullet and purchased the MSM Rotator with the Laser Point and the Wedge and also purchased the Star Focus Filter.

I've used it a couple of times now and setting up to Polaris is really easy with the Laser Pointer. The Wedge is a little temperamental in my opinion. Yes it works well, but when you tightening it up, it moves slightly. it's not an issue if you remember to counter the movement before tightening.

The Star Focus Filter is great too, although the Live View on my Camera isn't as good as I'd like it to be and I've ended up focusing on a distant light. However, once focused, I tape the lens and I'm good to go.

Using the Rotator, I've shoot several 8 minute exposures using ISO 100 and f2.8 and they all look sharp to me.

I've just ordered the Z and V Brackets and will use those in future without the Wedge.

All in all, I'm really impressed and it has spurred me on to keep shooting Astro

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
"I have friends who have bought star trackers and have never used them to take a photo because they were too complicated to set up! And these are intelligent people. The Move-Shoot-Move is the most compact and easy-to-set-up star tracker I have ever used. From the time I placed it on my tripod to finished alignment was only about two minutes, and within a couple more minutes, I was shooting tracked images of the stars. Now, I have discovered it can do time-lapse movements as well! That will be my next outing..."

Why do we need Move Shoot Move star tracker?

  • The Earth is rotating.
We know our Earth rotates once every 23h 56m4s. Its rotation axis goes through Polaris, and stars are not stationary relative to our Earth.
Just as the below photo shows, the stars circle around Polaris.
how to do polar alignment
  • What happened?
According to the 500 rule, we usually can not expose for more than 25s, often less than15 seconds, which results in:
1. Many faint stars are missing from our photo.
2. Ugly stars trails.
3. Noise ruins our composition.
  • How toĀ expose more than 60 seconds?
The Move Shoot Move tracker rotates at the same speed as the Earth but in the opposite direction. As a result, the stars will be tracked and remain in the viewfinder. Your exposure time can be up to minutes in duration, faint stars will show up in your pictures, star trails will disappear, and a lower ISO helps to reduce noise. Finally, you can get clear, pinpoint photos of stars and the night sky.
how to setup move shoot move star tracker

  • What's Polar alignment?
The Earth's rotation axis goes almost exactly through Polaris.
So, we need to make the Rotator's rotational axis parallel to the Earth's rotation axis. This is called polar alignment.
  • Is your Polar alignment complicated?
What if I don't know RA, D-dec, and I've never studied astronomy? Can I still do polar alignment?Ā
Don't worry. It's easy-
  • If you know where to find Polaris, aim the laser at Polaris, and polar alignment is accomplishedšŸ˜‰.
  • If you don't know where to find Polaris, download a free app, 'Skysafari,' and set it to VR mode. It will spot Polaris when you move your phone around the sky.
  • How to do a polar alignment in the Southern Hemisphere?
It's a similar operation with different stars; hereĀ is a tutorial in more detail.
  • If the star is tracked, will the foreground be blurred?
Yes, the foreground will be blurred. Then what do I do about that? Change the shooting sequence.
  1. First, we turn the tracker OFF for a clear foreground shot(your composition).
  2. Then we wait for the ideal stars to appear in our composition, turn the trackerĀ ON, and shoot the tracked stars. Then combine these two pictures to get the final one in Photoshop or other post-processing software.

Check Mr.Gunther's review, the godfather of timelapse.

Ā

The mechanism for time-lapse:Ā

It works by adjusting the angle of rotation, not the speed of rotation, with four options: Star Tracking Mode, Move Shoot Move mode of 0.05, 0.075, 0.1, and 0.125 degrees per picture. Therefore, you control theĀ camera's rotatingĀ based upon the angle selected, and the interval set on your timer (you need a separate timer/intervalometer, which is inexpensive). The longer the interval you set, the slower the rotation. Once you are done taking a picture (which the rotator ā€˜knows’ through the hot-shoe cable), the rotator will turn the defined angle, which means that the camera is not turning while the picture is being taken.

FAQs

YES! The tracker is designed for wide-angle Astro-landscape use but we realize that many people are using it for deep space also. Therefore although we recommend you not exceed 135mm focal length for best tracking, longer focal lengths may be used if the effect of torque is considered.

In order to not exceed recommended torque and possibly damage the tracker, the maximum length of your lens must be 305mm (12 inches) or less.

1, Replaced the Knob with a Button to solve the deficiencies with the knob design.Ā

2, 15% smallerĀ than the Knob.

3, Added 1/2 speed star tracking mode, then you can take photos of the Milkyway with one shot.

4, Removed the less frequently used panorama mode.Easier to install with the new screws with stopperĀ

5, An illuminator was added to the polar scope.

It has 2 modes!

Under the star tracker mode(by default), it can support all cameras.

Under the passive timelapse mode, it only works directly with Nikon, Canon, and Sony cameras through the hot-shoe port.

Under the passive timelapse mode, For non-Nikon, non-Canon, non-Sony cameras (Fujifilm, Panasonic, Olympus, Pentax, etc), youĀ just connect the intervalometer.

"Astrophotography made easy!"

"So I've always been interested in night sky photography, but finding the right gear was always a guessing game. Until I I saw an ad for the Move-Shoot-Move. With its relatively inexpensive price tag, I decided to give it a try. I was not disappointed at all. It is solidly constructed, and very easy to align and use in Star tracking mode. It arrived quickly, in time for a camping trip to a dark sky area. I was very impressed with the results. If you are in the market for a start tracker, you will not be disappointed with the Move-Shoot-Move.. Easy setup, user friendly, and most of all, it just works! I will be recommending it to all my friends who are interested in night sky photography. My dream of getting sharp, images of the Milky-Way have come true, and the Move-Shoot-Move made it possible. No complicated image stacking needed. Able to shoot long exposures at very low iso. I love this piece of gear, and you will too!"
