This ball head works as a regular ball head as well. When the counterweight system is not needed, you can simply detach it and use it for your daily shooting.
Why Use the NOMAD Balancing Counterweight Kit?
The NOMAD Balancing Counterweight Kit helps improve the balance of your camera setup, making night sky photography smoother, more stable, and more reliable.
It does not increase the official 3.5 kg payload of the NOMAD. Instead, it helps the system operate more comfortably within its designed range by improving weight distribution, especially when using heavier lenses or shooting at higher angles.
Better balance reduces strain on the system and allows for more consistent tracking performance during long exposures, resulting in a more stable shooting experience in real-world conditions.
What This Kit Actually Does
Unlike a simple weight add-on, this kit balances your setup:
- The counterweight arm is positioned directly opposite the camera — always at 180° — which distributes weight evenly.
- When shooting high elevation angles, heavier lenses (especially above 2 kg or when using a tripod collar) can create excess torque, causing tracking inaccuracies.
- Adding this balance kit reduces torque, keeps motion smooth, and improves your tracking accuracy for longer exposures.
You’ll want it if you:
- Shoot with longer or heavier lenses and need better balance
- Want your NOMAD to stay stable in any position, especially during off-center/offset shooting
- Aim for improved tracking accuracy for longer exposures
- Prefer a lightweight, compact setup that’s easy to carry
- Want the flexibility to use any standard ~54 mm diameter can filled with water, sand, or small weights
Lens Recommendations:
Without the Counterweight Kit: suitable for lenses up to 100 mm
With the Counterweight Kit: suitable for lenses up to 135 mm
💡Note: The ball head in this kit is custom-designed for proper balance. Other ball heads will not fit with this kit.
💡 Note on Counterweight Usage
The counterweight system is not required for all setups. If you are using a lightweight camera with a wide-angle lens, you can absolutely use the NOMAD without the counterweight kit.
The counterweight kit is primarily designed for heavier camera and lens combinations (typically around 2 kg or more), where additional balance is needed to maintain smooth tracking and reduce torque during high-angle shooting.

Secure the ballhead directly to the NOMAD rotating plate.

⚠️ Important: The ballhead must be installed directly on NOMAD. It cannot be placed on top of the V-mount to function as a counterweight system.

Connect the two counterweight arm segments together.

Screw the assembled long arm into the threading hole on the ballhead.

Screw the counterweight base onto the arm.

Attach a beverage bottle with a diameter of around 54 mm to serve as the counterweight.

Make sure every part is tightened securely.

Attach your lens to the ballhead.

The basic kit setup is now complete.
